About Luther League
For high school youth (ninth through twelfth grade), Luther League provides opportunities for deepened biblical study and leadership within the congregation. Each Sunday class is held in the old basement Luther League room between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Sometimes the lesson is focused on specific scripture verses or video presentations. Other times the casual atmosphere encourages open forum discussion and time for special activity planning.
Throughout the year, the Luther League plays a vital leadership role within St. Peter’s and the community of Greene. During Advent season, they prepare and serve soup suppers before evening worships. The Christmas Eve Candlelight service is organized and led entirely by the Luther League. Already attracting hundreds of worshipers, this is a blessed tradition that is highly anticipated and continues to grow. The youth also play an active role in the Easter morning Sunrise Service. They lecture, per form the children’s sermon, and accompany the worship with a rich array of musical instruments. Outside the church they sponsor food stands at the annual Herb Festival and Green River Days. They also have exercised environmental awareness by constructing and maintaining community soda can receptacles for recycling as well as adopting a stretch of highway along HWY 14. While all of the above afford exciting opportunities for youth leadership within the church and community, the Luther League’s annual summer trip provides an opportunity for service on a much larger scale.
For two weeks each summer the Luther League youth alternate between a backpacking excursion and a Habitat for Humanity trip. On multiple occasions in the past, the adventure bound have roughed it in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Montana. Youth have also traveled to coastal cities to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Within these trips the youth were able to visit national scenic and historic treasures such as Yellowstone National Park, the Great Divide, the Grand Canyon, both Pacific and Atlantic oceans, tour Navy battleships, Walt Disney World, the Smithsonian, the Holocaust Museum, and Ground Zero. Additionally, they returned with a broadened sense of existence and a greater understanding of diversity. These experiences of wilderness survival and building for the homeless have cultivated lasting friendships and strengthened faith within the youth at St. Peter’s.
